Addiction Therapist for Young Men
Build Change That Holds
Addiction therapy for young men in Toronto helps you understand what keeps pulling you back to alcohol, drugs, gambling, or another compulsive behaviour, then build a plan for changing it. We provide virtual individual therapy across Ontario for teens generally aged 14 and up, young adults, and adults. Treatment can support abstinence, moderation, or another goal you define, and our clinicians each hold at least a master’s degree.
How do I know when drinking or using has become a problem?
The clearest sign is often the gap between what you planned and what happened. You meant to have two drinks and kept going, or deleted the betting app and reinstalled it. The relief lasts less time and creates more damage afterward.
For young men who feel stuck in drinking, drug use, gambling, or another compulsive pattern, individual therapy provides a private place to understand what is driving the behaviour and build changes that hold up outside the session.
Therapy tracks what happened before the urge, what you expected the behaviour to do, and what followed. That sequence shows where change can begin.
Why do I keep going back after deciding to stop?
Repeated use often has a job. It may shut down racing thoughts, ease social situations, or block a painful memory. Removing the behaviour without replacing that job leaves the same trigger in place.
When alcohol has become the fastest way to quiet worry or tension, understanding the anxiety and drinking loop can make the pattern easier to recognize and interrupt. Early progress may look like noticing the urge sooner, changing what happens after a trigger, or recovering faster from a setback.
What does an addiction therapist actually work on?
The work begins with the pattern affecting your week. Together, we identify triggers, consequences, previous attempts to change, and where your plan breaks down. Sessions can then focus on coping skills, emotional regulation, relationships, trauma, and decisions that support your goal.
Because addiction often overlaps with anger, shame, identity, relationships, and the pressure to stay in control, therapy for men addresses more than the behaviour alone. Abstinence and moderation can both be discussed. The plan depends on the risks, what happened when you tried to cut back, and the level of care you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can trauma keep an addictive pattern going?
Yes. A substance or compulsive behaviour can become a fast way to escape memories, body reactions, anger, or emotional shutdown. If those reactions stay active, the urge can return even after you understand the consequences.
When substance use is tied to experiences that still feel present, trauma therapy for men can help reduce the hold those experiences have on your choices now.
Trauma work does not require recounting every detail. Preparation comes first, and the pace can be adjusted as you learn how your mind and body respond to difficult material.
How does addiction therapy work for young men?
Your treatment plan is evidence-based, trauma-informed, and shaped around the problem affecting your life. We may draw from CBT, DBT, IFS, or EMDR according to the work you are doing.
The combination of professional training, lived experience, and different clinical specialties across our clinical team makes it easier to match you with someone who understands what you are facing.
Our clinic is based in Toronto, and we work virtually with clients across Ontario. Online sessions let you test new strategies in the same environment where triggers, routines, and decisions occur.
How much does individual addiction therapy cost?
Individual therapy is $175 for a 50-minute virtual session. EMDR therapy is $220 for 50 minutes, when EMDR is part of the treatment plan. We are a private-pay clinic and provide receipts that you can submit to an extended health insurance plan, although reimbursement depends on the plan.
Young men Toronto can attend from a private space at home, work, or school, while clients elsewhere in Ontario use the same virtual format. A free 20-minute consultation is available before booking a paid session.
Do I have to stop drinking or using before I start therapy?
No. You can begin while you are still drinking, using, gambling, or unsure what you want to change. The first task is to describe the pattern accurately, assess the risks, and decide what goal makes sense for your situation.
What happens in the first addiction therapy session?
The first session is a structured conversation about what has been happening, what you want to change, and what you have tried. We will also ask about previous treatment and any immediate concerns that could affect the level of care you need. You do not start with the hardest memory.
Is virtual addiction therapy available outside Toronto?
Yes. Sessions are available virtually across Ontario, so you do not need to live in Toronto to work with us. You need a private place, a stable internet connection, and enough privacy to speak openly during the 50-minute session.
What if weekly therapy is not enough?
If weekly outpatient therapy is not the right level of care, we will discuss more intensive options. This may become clear from withdrawal risk, safety concerns, repeated crises, or the amount of structure needed to interrupt the pattern.
How do we take the next step?
A free 20-minute consultation gives your family a chance to describe what is happening, ask who should attend, and decide whether the therapist’s approach fits the situation. No credit card is required, and the call does not commit anyone to therapy.
