Individual Therapy

A private place to figure out what's actually happening — and change it.

From the outside, your life might look fine. You go to work or school, answer messages, keep things running.

Privately, something is off.

Maybe you drink more than you planned, again. Maybe you feel angry without knowing why, or flat, or stuck in a loop you keep promising to break.

A man with a beard and casual clothes sitting on a beige sofa talking to a therapist or counselor who is taking notes on a clipboard. The therapist is seated on a black chair and is wearing a white shirt. A glass of water, a tissue box, and a closed notebook are on a small round table between them.

What may be bringing you here

Substance Use — Drinking or using drugs after deciding to stop, even when part of you means it.

Gambling — When the problem lives in your pocket, it follows you everywhere.

Compulsive Habits — Gaming, scrolling, or other habits taking more of your life than you want to admit.

Anxiety — Feeling on edge all the time, waiting for something to go wrong.

Depression — Hopeless, numb, or disconnected from the life you built.

Trauma — Carrying something painful you've never talked about, and aren't sure you want to.

These problems rarely stay in their own lanes. Anxiety feeds drinking. Old trauma feeds anger. A substance that started as a way to cope becomes the problem itself.

If your private summary is I can't stop or something has to change — that's enough reason to book a session. You don't need a diagnosis, and you don't need an addiction.

If you're skeptical of therapy

Skepticism doesn't disqualify you.

Maybe you've never done this before and don't know what you're supposed to say. Maybe you tried therapy once and left feeling analyzed instead of helped. Maybe someone is pushing you to go and you're only half convinced.

Sessions here are direct, collaborative, and useful — no lectures, no therapy language that doesn't fit. If you disagree with something, say so. It won't offend us, and it helps shape the work.

Our founder and director, Ted Boyle, has been in recovery from alcohol and other drugs since 2017. Not every Wayfinder therapist shares that history, but the clinic was built by someone who knows how hard change is.

What the work focuses on

Recovery isn't about willpower. It's about learning what's actually in your control and building the discipline to act on it.

Therapy here aims at change you can see in your actual week:

  • Understanding what drives a behaviour — and catching patterns before they take over

  • Recovery on your terms — cutting back or stopping completely, whichever fits your goals

  • Steadier emotional regulation — managing anxiety, anger, and urges

  • Working through trauma — at your pace, at your depth

  • Clarity — on relationships, identity, values, and direction

We won't promise a cure, because no honest therapist can. You can expect an evidence-based process, clear communication, and treatment shaped around the goals you set.

How therapy works at Wayfinder

Collaborative. Evidence-based. Trauma-informed. Tailored to you, not delivered from a template.

Depending on your therapist and your goals, treatment may draw from:

ApproachWhat it does
CBTNotice and change the thinking and habits that keep a problem going
DBTConcrete skills for handling intense emotions and urges
EMDRProcess distressing experiences and reduce the intensity attached to them
IFSWork with the parts of you pulling in different directions — like the part that wants to quit and the part that reaches for a drink

Trauma work doesn't require recounting every detail. You control the pace and the depth.

On substance use, both abstinence and harm reduction are valid directions. We work with the goal that fits your situation.

Your first session

A structured conversation — and it doesn't start with the hardest material.

Expect questions about:

  • What brought you in

  • What's been happening

  • What you want to change

  • Any past therapy or treatment, and what did or didn't work

You don't need to arrive with a speech prepared. The therapist guides the conversation, and your goals shape where the work goes from there.
