Understanding the topic
Understand the title and check the scope
Ontario mental health professionals have different training, regulators, and scopes of practice. A professional title helps you check qualifications, but it does not tell you everything about an individual clinician’s experience.
Registered psychotherapists are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Registered social workers are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers; appropriately qualified registrants can provide psychotherapy within their competence.
Psychologists and psychological associates are regulated by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. Psychiatrists are medical doctors with specialty training in psychiatry and can prescribe medication. Not every professional offers every service within the profession’s scope.
In Ontario, “therapist” is a broad everyday word. Protected professional titles, registration, and scope of practice provide more specific information. A person’s title can help you understand their professional accountability, but it does not by itself tell you whether they have experience with your concern or whether your insurer will cover the appointment.
For further context, see OCSWSSW: psychotherapy requirements.
Recognizing the pattern
Questions that may be bringing you here
A title is a starting point for checking a professional’s role, not a complete description of their experience. These questions often arise when comparing providers.
- Confusing a general description such as therapist with a regulated title.
- Being unsure who can provide psychotherapy.
- Needing assessment, diagnosis, medication, or a combination.
- Trying to confirm insurance coverage from a job title alone.
Confirm current registration and ask about the specific service you need. Therapy, diagnosis, psychological assessment, and prescribing are different activities; coverage also depends on your particular plan.
A practical way forward
Understanding Ontario mental health professional titles
Choosing care involves more than finding a familiar title. These checks help connect credentials with the actual service and practical arrangements you need.
Verify the regulator
Use the relevant public register to check current registration. Read any terms or limitations that apply.
Match the service
Ask whether the clinician provides the assessment or treatment you need. Training and competence vary within a profession.
Clarify medication needs
Medication assessment requires an authorized prescriber. A social worker or registered psychotherapist does not prescribe medication.
Confirm coverage
Check the clinician’s exact designation with your benefit plan. A receipt does not guarantee reimbursement.
Putting the ideas into practice
Psychotherapists and social workers
Registered Psychotherapists are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Registered Social Workers are regulated by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Appropriately qualified social workers can provide psychotherapy within their competence and applicable professional requirements.
An MSW is a Master of Social Work degree; RSW indicates registration as a social worker in Ontario. Education and registration are different pieces of information. Social work can include broader roles beyond psychotherapy, so ask about the individual clinician’s training and experience in the work you are seeking.
Psychologists and psychiatrists
Psychologists and Psychological Associates in Ontario are regulated by the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario. Their authorized practice areas and client populations matter. Psychological assessment can include diagnosis within the professional’s competence; not every psychologist offers every type of testing.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with specialist training in psychiatry. Medical assessment, diagnosis, and medication management are important parts of that role, and some psychiatrists also provide psychotherapy. A psychologist is not a physician and does not prescribe medication in Ontario.
Choose the service as well as the designation
For psychotherapy, several regulated professions may have appropriate competence. If you need medication, a formal assessment, or specialized testing, ask which professional and service can provide it. Do not assume all appointments described as mental health care include those functions.
Check the regulator’s public register for current status and relevant information. Before booking, ask your insurer which designations and services are covered, whether a referral is required, and what annual or per-session limits apply. A receipt or a professional title alone does not guarantee reimbursement.

What this can look like
Someone looking for weekly therapy may be well served by an appropriately qualified social worker or psychotherapist. Someone seeking a medication review needs a prescribing medical professional. Someone seeking a specific psychological assessment should confirm that the provider offers that assessment. The right question is what service you need and who is qualified to provide it.
Keeping the context in view
Social work and psychotherapy can overlap
A registered social worker may use the title psychotherapist in accordance with applicable requirements. Social work can also involve broader work with relationships, systems, and practical circumstances; the individual service should be described clearly.
Do not choose only by the longest list of credentials. Ask about relevant experience, the proposed approach, and how the clinician would collaborate with other professionals if needed.

Can a social worker provide psychotherapy?
Yes, when appropriately qualified and practising within competence and regulatory requirements. Verify registration and ask about the clinician’s training.
Can a psychologist prescribe medication in Ontario?
Psychologists do not prescribe medication in Ontario. A psychiatrist or another authorized prescriber can assess medication options.
Does insurance cover every designation?
No. Plans differ. Confirm eligible designations and any limits directly with your insurer before relying on reimbursement.
Is a social worker the same as an unregulated counsellor?
No. Registered Social Worker is a regulated title in Ontario, with registration and professional standards overseen by OCSWSSW. A social worker’s individual training and competence still matter when choosing psychotherapy. Verify registration and ask about experience rather than treating the word “counselling” as evidence of a particular qualification.
Does insurance cover every type of therapist?
No. Coverage depends on your particular plan, the clinician’s designation, and sometimes the service or referral requirements. Ask the insurer directly before assuming reimbursement. Check annual limits and per-session limits as well as which professions are included.
How can I verify a clinician’s registration?
Use the relevant regulator’s public register, such as CRPO, OCSWSSW, CPBAO, or CPSO. Check the person’s identity, current status, and relevant registration information. Registration does not answer every question about fit, so also ask about the specific service and experience you need.
